How to Adjust a Tactical Vest for a True Fit

A well-fitted vest won't bounce, bind or chafe. From the three adjustment points to dynamic testing, a step-by-step guide to a snug fit.

The three key adjustment points

A tactical vest's fit comes from three points working together: shoulder straps, waist (cummerbund) and chest. Shoulder straps set the height — adjust until the body panel sits naturally without choking or slipping. The waist controls closeness and load — snug but not tight, staying stable when you run. The chest affects overall wrap.

Adjust all three together; tuning only one usually leaves you uncomfortable no matter what.

  • Shoulder straps: control height — no choking, no slipping
  • Waist / cummerbund: control fit and load — snug, not tight
  • Chest: controls overall wrap and stability

Dynamic testing is the final standard

Looking right while standing isn't the same as fitting right. After adjusting, do three moves: squat (check waist binding), raise both arms overhead (check shoulder pressure), and bend forward (check forward shift). Any hard pressure, rub or bounce means returning to that adjustment point for fine-tuning.

A loaded test matters too: wear your actual gear, walk and jog a few steps, and confirm it stays stable under load.

Common mistakes

The most common error is 'looser is better' — a loose vest bounces, chafes and shifts its mounting points. The second is forgetting the clothing layer underneath: a size tuned in summer binds once you add winter layers. The fix is to leave layering allowance and get in the habit of a quick re-adjustment before each wear.
