Choosing a Tactical Vest for Summer

In summer, breathability comes first and light weight second. From mesh construction and light fabric to lighter colors, a complete hot-weather selection guide.

Mesh construction is the cooling workhorse

Over long summer wear, heat hurts more than weight. Large mesh panels on the back and lining let air flow between the vest and your body, carrying away heat and sweat. Large-hole mesh breathes best; small-hole mesh holds a bit more strength.

Prioritize vests with mesh on the back, sides and lining — like our Marmot mesh vest and MILITAUR ventilation vest, built specifically for hot environments.

Light fabric cuts the load

In summer choose 500D or lighter blends, not heavy 1000D. Lighter fabric reduces the carried feel and dries faster. Combined with mesh construction, a vest can weigh noticeably less than a fall/winter model, keeping you comfortable through long activity.

Lighter colors run cooler

Dark colors absorb heat; light colors reflect it. In direct sun, light or light-based camo vests feel cooler and build up less heat. In summer, olive, khaki and light gray beat pure black for comfort.

Reduce the load and hardware

Summer weight makes you sweat and tire faster. Trim your loadout to the essentials and reduce contact area between vest and body. A quick-release buckle that lets you drop the vest to cool off at rest is a real bonus.
