Custom Tactical Vests: MOQ, Lead Time and Sampling

Can you do small batches, how long until delivery, and how does sampling work — the three things to nail down before custom production. Understand MOQ and lead time, and you negotiate from strength.

What MOQ is and whether it's negotiable

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the smallest order a factory will accept, set by fabric minimums, line-change costs and hardware purchase volumes. It isn't fixed: styles using stock fabric have low MOQs, while special fabric and colors run high.

Practical negotiation strategy: run a small trial order to verify quality first, then scale; or use stock fabric and stock colors to push MOQ down. Many factories support 'small first, then scale' — safer than pitching a big order upfront.

  • Stock fabric/colors: low MOQ, small trial runs possible
  • Special fabric / exclusive colors: high MOQ due to fabric minimums
  • Small first, then scale: verify quality before volume
  • Combined ordering: merge colors and sizes to lower per-color MOQ

What lead time depends on

Lead time accumulates across fabric sourcing, sampling, cutting, sewing, finishing, QC and packing. Standard styles ship faster; complex prints, extra pockets and special fabrics stretch the timeline. Before ordering, have the factory break down each stage and state the total days from payment to shipment — not a vague 'about a month.'

Sampling is your safeguard

Always confirm a sample before mass production. The sample exposes every pattern, color and workmanship issue, usually taking one to two rounds of adjustment. Once you lock the approval sample, bulk quality is judged against it — so pattern or color problems don't surface after the whole run is made. Skipping sampling saves pennies and gambles the entire order.

What customization can change

The options are wide: fabric and colors, screen/heat-transfer printing, embroidered logos, hardware (buckles/zippers/webbing), size charts, and packaging and hang tags. The earlier you put custom needs into a tech pack, the more accurate the quote and lead time. As a factory with 15 years focused on vest production, we support flexible customization from ODM through OEM.
